James Reid, a Kent Cricket Community Coach, reviews the Super 8’s soft-ball Tournament U13’s in July 2016 for the Peter Harris Shield.
Remarkably for the summer of 2016, a beautiful summers day played host to the inaugural Greenwich Secondary Schools Cricket Competition. 4 teams entered, what was a keenly contested tournament, and all played their part in an exciting day. Eventual winners and first recipients of the Peter Harris Shield were Woolwich Polytechnic, who managed to win all 3 of their matches and finished top of the table with 9 points. Second were John Roan, who on another day may have finished top, given that they scored the most runs and took the most wickets of all 4 sides on the day. Stationers’ Crown Woods entered 2 sides, one mixed side (m) and one all boys team (B). Their (B) side managed to beat their counterparts and claimed 3rd while their (M) side couldn’t manage a victory on the day and so came 4th. However what was great to see was the improvement that all the teams made as the tournament went on, and the spirit in which the games was played, which was excellent.
Both Greenwich District Cricket and Kent Cricket were very pleased by the way the teams conducted themselves and how keenly contested the day was, a great advert for the game! This will be an annual event and we hope that more schools will enter next year to take the competition to the next level. I would like to thank, Dan Garvey at John Roan who helped organise the day and provided a great facility for the students to play, all the teachers who helped umpire and score and Harry Sampson (Greenwich District Coach) who helped the day run smoothly.
